Meekness

God grants the things of the Earth to those who will not take it for themselves.  This contrary thing to modern culture is in line with the law of love, which looks to the brother first, and does not insist on its own way.  God, in His heart, grants the meek with what they desire.

Consider Hannah, the mother of Samuel.  In 1 Samuel 1, Hannah was loved by her husband, but she had no children.  She desperately wanted a child, and while she was at the temple praying, she cried out to the only help there is, she prayed silently to the Lord.  1 Samuel 1:13 says she prayed silently, but her lips were moving.

Eli, the prophet, in his own judgment, thought she was drunk.  When questioned, she explained herself, and Eli spoke by the Spirit that she would conceive.  She had promised that he would be the Lord’s, and that he would be a nazirite.  Hannah prayed earnestly for what she could not and would not take for herself, and she received one of the greatest of all prophets, one whose words never fell to the ground, because she chose meekness over her own strength.  As Paul said, God’s strength is made perfect in weakness.  This then, was by the Kingdom of God, for it was God’s hand.

In a similar way, it was not until Leah learned to be meek before she became the mother of Judah, meaning praise.  For her first three sons, she thought she could earn the love of her husband, yet, for all her efforts, he still preferred Rachel.  Finally realizing the plight of her circumstances, she ceased her own efforts, and went to praise.  It is for this reason that God chose the tribe of Judah to be the royal line, for the meek shall inherit the Earth.

All along, God has been doing the same thing, and all these things had been hidden since the foundation.  Yet, Jesus, perfect teacher, says, if you want God to move in His Kingdom, this is who He is.  He will not move contrary to his nature.

There, for all the centuries of history, God had moved here and there, saving a few in the boat of Noah, only the widow of Zaraphath, and only healing one leper named Namaan, a Syrian even.  It wasn’t that God couldn’t have healed them all, or that there weren’t other sinners just as in need of salvation as Zacheus was on that busy road, but only Zacheus got stopped for.

If you want to be the one Jesus stops for, comes over to, and says, I am to have dinner at your house, you’ld better be doing things His way.  You better be doing things according to the Kingdom.  You’ld better not have just a doctrine and confession of faith, but simply believe.
